REFLECTIONS

Jennifer Andrew (nee Bear) - My mother.
Mothers as Leaders

'It's not about me, but through me'.

(Author unknown)

What does it mean to be a leader?

It means to go first, to lead the way.

It is about responsibility to self and others.

My great-grandfather was a paramount chief in the islands of Papua New Guinea. He knew what it meant to lead and be responsible for a clan; that power must be used to protect people. He stepped up at a pivotal moment in my father's family history and chose to lay down spears and encourage peacefulness, and learning different skills that would empower his people in their rapidly changing world. He was a person of deep heart, vision, and great courage.

All parents know what leadership is like. Certainly, all mothers know what daily leadership is like - to carry, nourish, and protect new life, and step into the unknown with body and being to do whatever is needed for this life to grow and flourish. A mother has the mighty task of flowing with the deep emotional tides that come with enabling new life to exist through her, and not be about her.

I am grateful to my great-grandfather, Chief Bwagagaia of Logeia Island, for his warrior courage to protect the women, children, and men in his family.

And I honour the amazing mothers in my lineages who have had the inner strength and daily courage to nourish their families no matter the circumstance.

I regard my mother as a leader, and I am deeply grateful for her life and her service to family and community, here in Australia and in Papua New Guinea.

I trust that I will live each day with the same gentle warrior spirit and practical daily action to do what is necessary to nourish the young people in my care; to be strong and well within themselves as they go forward, using all of their natural strengths and choosing their most nourishing, meaningful life.
